Al Gore i Stockholm

"Alla länder, inklusive Sverige, måste göra mer i kampen mot klimathotet". Det sade mottagaren av fredspriset Al Gore efter dagens tal i Sveriges riksdag. Gore pekade även ut sätt att bekämpa klimathotet:

-Låt människor betala skatt på sina utsläpp och inte på vad de tjänar, sade Al Gore som tillsammans med ordföranden i FN:s klimatpanel Rajendra Pachauri talade i riksdagen.

Pachauri uppgav att världen har fram till 2015 på sig för att få stopp på koldioxidökningar, sedan kommer situationen att försämras snabbt.Gore betonade vikten av att världen kommer överens om åtgärder och mål för klimatpolitiken senast vid det planerade mötet i Köpenhamn 2009. Han vill dessutom att de åtgärder som man kommit överens om tidigareläggs med två år.

Fredspristagaren gratulerade Sverige till att vara ledande i kampen mot klimathotet. Men han tillade alltså också att alla länder, även Sverige, måste göra mera för att bemöta hotet.

Gore beklagade att det verkar som om hans hemland USA försöker blockera processen vid det stora klimatmötet på Bali. Samtidigt så tror han på ett genombrott i slutet av förhandlingarna som håller på veckan ut.

-Jag tror att USA ändrar sig och att det blir ett gemensamt avtal. Min erfarenhet är att det brukar bli genombrott på slutet, säger Al Gore. Gore är övertygad om att det kommer att ske stora förändringar i USA:s syn på klimatfrågan.

-Om inte förr så efter ett kommande presidentbyte, säger han.

Gore wins Nobel Peace Prize

The 2007 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and Al Gore for "their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change."According to the official press release from The Norwegian Nobel Committee: "Al Gore has for a long time been one of the world's leading environmentalist politicians. He became aware at an early stage of the climatic challenges the world is facing. His strong commitment, reflected in political activity, lectures, films and books, has strengthened the struggle against climate change. He is probably the single individual who has done most to create greater worldwide understanding of the measures that need to be adopted.

By awarding the Nobel Peace Prize for 2007 to the IPCC and Al Gore, the Norwegian Nobel Committee is seeking to contribute to a sharper focus on the processes and decisions that appear to be necessary to protect the world’s future climate, and thereby to reduce the threat to the security of mankind. Action is necessary now, before climate change moves beyond man’s control."
